Software Engineer AI - iO Bonzai

iO's ambition is to become the AI Native Marketing & Technology partner of the next decade, and iO Bonzai is the platform that has to carry it. You want the things you build to actually get used. Not in a pilot that quietly stops after three months, but every day, by thousands of people.

iO Bonzai is changing shape: from chat to work, and on to AI team members that pick up tasks themselves. The job is platform engineering. You are not building AI use cases one by one, you build the platform that lets 2,000+ colleagues and our customers build theirs.

The team is small and remote-first, spread across iO's campuses in the Netherlands, Belgium, Sweden, Denmark and Bulgaria.

About iO Bonzai

iO Bonzai is our own AI and automation platform: Chat for secure assistants, Apps so teams build their own tools, Connect for access to CRM, ERP and CMS. EU hosted and built for the EU AI Act. The full architecture is a mix of components including open-source forks, hosted primarily on Azure. The software is primarily TypeScript, Python and Rust, gradually being replaced with our own technology.

What you will do

• Your speciality is everything around the models: integration, platform, reliability.

• You use the models as they are.

• Much of the work is connectors and tools. The Connectors Hub is becoming the single place where an integration is configured once and then works everywhere, inside iO Bonzai and in the desktop harnesses we support. That means MCP servers, credential handling, and a permission model that still holds when the same connector serves an iO team and a customer. Another part is multi-tenancy: organisations running iO Bonzai independently, with their own projects, departments and marketplace, and access derived from their contract instead of configured by hand.

• Alongside the Connectors Hub, you build custom API-based connectors for the iO Bonzai Workflows platform (based on n8n).

• The agent layer runs alongside all this rather than after it, so you also build the tools and surfaces that AI team members work through. Because iO Bonzai is partially a fork, you will merge an upstream release and build something nobody else has in the same week.

• You work across the platform's core components rather than inside one of them:

  • The API gateway; model access, routing, failover, usage and cost control.

  • The agent runtime; orchestration, subagents, task planning, long-running execution.

  • The Workflows platform (based on n8n); predictable and repeatable workflows connecting actions across platforms and LLMs.

  • The Connectors Hub and tool layer; how agents reach systems, and the permissions governing it.

  • The sandbox; running agent-generated code without creating a liability.

  • The retrieval and knowledge layer; embeddings, vector search, organisational memory.

  • The observability and evaluation platform; tracing runs, and measuring whether they did the right thing.

  • The guardrail and policy layer; keeping personal data and credentials out, anomaly detection, audit trail.

• A relevant IT education at bachelor level or above in software engineering.

• A broad interest in AI and data engineering, and a solid working understanding of LLM architectures.

• A strong foundation in software engineering, around four years or more, including error handling, asynchronous operations and streaming data. We work in TypeScript and Python, and do not expect fluency in both.

• You have worked with AI-related technology, this can include your studies or something you picked up for the fun of it.

• You work AI native. Coding agents are part of how you build: Claude Code, Cursor, Copilot or their successors.

• You turn ideas into diagrams and enjoy sparring about them.

• Fluent English, the working language of the team. Where you live is up to you.

Nice to have

• Built or consumed MCP servers, or worked with retrieval and vector search in production.

• Azure experience, and able to build web front ends alongside your AI work. The iO Bonzai front end is React.
